Poland holds ceremonies commemorating Jews murdered in Nazi camp

Ceremonies commemorating Jews murdered by Nazis in the mass execution in the Nazi-run extermination camp of Majdanek were held in Lublin, eastern Polandon Friday, the PAP news agency reported.

Former inmates, youth, representatives of the local Jewish community and local authorities paid homage to more than 18,000 Jews killed by Nazis on Nov. 3, 1943.

Roman Litman, head of the Lublin branch of the Warsaw Jewish Community, said people come here every year to pay tribute to the murdered.

Majdanek is the second largest extermination camp run by Nazis in Poland during the Second World War. Between 1941 and 1944 Naziskilled nearly 230,000 people of 50 nationalities, including 100,000 Jews brought to the Majdanek camp. Those who escaped mass executions perished of starvation, diseases, labor beyond human endurance and in gas chambers.
